Brewers Malthouse No. 2
Weymouth, Dorset
United Kingdom
Malthouse No. 2, a 19
th
century building used for the cleaning, drying, and germination of barley, is one of a group of preserved brewery buildings that form the core of the Brewers Quay Conservation Area.
We participated in detailed negotiations with conservation groups and English Heritage to gain approval for residential conversion of the Malthouse into 6 2- and 3-bedroom houses that preserve the fabric and structure of the existing buildings. We glazed all existing shuttered windows and used Victorian-style roof lights to bring additional daylight to the interior. Several of the houses feature double-height living rooms with galleries, and, in one, a double-glazed ceiling provides a view of the tall kiln oast.
The land adjacent the Malthouse is long, narrow, and steeply sloping, with spectacular views over Weymouth Bay. We proposed a terrace of 4 split-level 3-bedroom townhouses to form the retaining wall for the existing slope. Two apartments designed in the style of a detached villa feature bay windows that maximise the view over the bay.
Admiral Walk Conversion and Development received a Certificate of Commendation from Weymouth Civic Society for the sensitive conversion of the existing Malthouse and new character development
