Malthouse No. 4 is a large and prominent element of Weymouth’s prestigious Brewers Quay Conservation Area. This distinctive and virtually complete example of a Victorian Malthouse is listed as Grade ll*, which places it among the top 6% of the country’s outstanding protected buildings.
Our charge was to renovate the building and transform the working floors into luxury flats and maisonettes of various sizes. The 10 2-bedroom configurations, lifts, and stairs were designed to minimize disruption of the existing structure and to impose the least possible extra stress on the building. Various surviving items of machinery—kilns, ventilators, storage bins, and machinery— are on display in the basement entrance area and are accessible to specialist societies and interest groups.
External alterations included repairs to frost-damaged brickwork, and pointing and replacing decayed timber, roof slates, and rainwater goods. We retained the existing shuttered window frames, but added a limited number of matching window openings to provide daylight to interior areas.
New carports provide secluded parking within the existing walled courtyard.
