Onslow County Justice Complex
Jacksonville, North Carolina
Brennan Architects provided programming and design services for a new 560-bed jail in downtown Jacksonville next to the existing County courthouses. The project includes a new 25,000 sq. ft. Sheriff’s Building and a 15,000 sq. ft. office complex for justice-related departments. In addition to providing 528 new beds, the new jail component provides a salley port, kitchen, intake processing, magistrate’s office, and property and records storage.

This project is located in the city’s design district, which required a creative approach to placing such a large jail on a downtown site. We solved this issue by “wrapping” the jail with the sheriff’s building so that it looks like an office building from the exterior. We then went through intensive special use permitting hearings to gain approval from the city.

Brennan Architects developed a design program for this Direct Supervision project that applies precast concrete to the modular system and the main building structure. This approach offers a tremendous savings in both time and project cost, as well as a higher degree of security, with building materials manufactured in a controlled factory environment and assembled on-site.
