The location of highly trained security and medical staff in a single facility allows the Department of Correction to provide improved and more efficient healthcare for this inmate population.This 352,000 square foot facility houses inmates with mental illness, physical disabilities, and those with terminal conditions or the ailments brought on by advanced years.

The facility accommodates all new inmates at the time of reception and those inmates requiring hospital-level care. The Special Needs Unit meets Americans with Disabilities Act requirements, as well as federal, state and local statutes pertaining to inmate care.
