The Moorings
Ferndown, Dorset
United Kingdom

The Moorings, a sheltered housing facility for the elderly, uses the neo-classical character of Bathwick Hill and the canal-side/wharfside architecture of Sydney Wharf as its guiding design influence.

The main building forms a street frontage in keeping with the historic pattern of development in the area. The 4-storey facility contains sheltered apartments for the elderly and features a semi-circular residents' lounge that provides an attractive view of Bathwick Hill.

The size and proportion of windows and the demeanor of the building provide seamless integration with the surrounding architecture. The building features Bath stone, natural slate, and timber windows throughout.  A new pavilion on the canal frontage sits within the courtyard defined by the main building and serves those taking advantage of the waterside leisure and recreational activities supported by British Waterways.

This project involved considerable coordination with the Bath and North East Somerset Council.  The building received a commendation from the National Stone Awards in 2000.
